Charles Oliveira steps in for injured Paul Taylor against Donald Cerrone at UFC on Versus 5

08 July 2011
Charles Oliveira will return to action earlier than initially expected, as the UFC announced late Wednesday that he will step in for an injured Paul Taylor to meet Donald Cerrone at UFC on Versus 5 next month.

This makes it an entirely new fight from the one initially targeted for this event, as Cerrone had stepped in as an injury replacement himself for Taylor's originally scheduled opponent John Makdessi. The news also comes just shortly after Oliveira was rumored to be returning in November against Joe Lauzon.

Oliveira fought late last month at UFC on Versus 4 in Pittsburgh, Penn., putting on a show with Nik Lentz on the night's undercard before delivering an illegal knee that became a major issue throughout the following week. Entering that fight 14-1 after suffering his first career loss to Jim Miller, Oliveira was looking to be up in the fight before the knee, but the referee missed the illegal blow and it directly led to Oliveira's opening to finish the fight. His victory over Lentz was then overturned to a "no contest" upon review last week.

Cerrone looks to continue on his four fight win streak, which includes two wins inside the Octagon since the WEC roster was folded into the big brother promotion. The two time WEC Title challenger finished his run in the WEC with wins over Jamie Varner and Chris Horodecki, and continued in his winning ways with victories over Paul Kelly and Vagner Rocha.

UFC on Versus 5 takes place from the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wis. on August 14, headlined by the welterweight fight between Dan Hardy and Chris Lytle.
